US Gold Commemoratives -- Marian Anderson & Grant Wood
Today I was looking through an old yearbook from 1980 that mentioned two US gold coins that were issued that year, honoring Marian Anderson and Grant Wood. The Anderson coin was 1/2 oz. and the Grant coin was 1 oz.
I then looked on eBay to see if any were being sold there, and I found 2 Anderson coins for a bidding price of about $510 for both-- well below gold's current spot value. 2 Grant coins were also being offered, again well below spot. Does anyone know more about these coins? Is it worth bidding on them for the sake of their gold content? Just curious because I had not ever heard of these coins before. |
Re: US Gold Commemoratives -- Marian Anderson & Grant Wood
I have one Grant Wood medallion. My father bought it in December 1980 for the price of 1 ounce of gold at the time, about $580. It's taken this long for gold to get back near that price. Both medallions were outdated immediately and didn't catch on. The fact that you had never heard of them is proof of this. I would love to sell mine when the price gets higher than the original purchase price. I think coins are a better buy.

Just thought GIMers (if that's a word!) would like to know: There's a Grant Wood 1-oz gold piece on ebay going for a $536 as a buy-it-now item. That's $3 below spot! I'd get it myself if I had the cash, but I thought I'd pass it along... :ARMS1:

Starting bid is $526.00, so you might even win it for less than $ 3 under spot.
BUT...look at his negative feedbacks. Would you want to send him $ 500 + of your hard earned money?? |
